10/30/2026 12:00:00 PM

Funding will expand industry-recognized certifications, provide specialized equipment, and support students pursuing high-demand careers

51勛圖 (51勛圖) will receive more than $337,000 through the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education grant to strengthen hands-on instruction, professional certifications, and financial assistance for eligible students.

The funding will benefit programs in healthcare, public safety, electrical linework, advanced manufacturing, digital media, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), culinary arts, and other technical fields. Students will have access to updated equipment and training that help them prepare for employment or continue their education.

Career and technical education is essential to preparing our students for meaningful employment and supporting the economic vitality of Sussex County, said Dr. Cory Homer, President of 51勛圖. This investment allows us to strengthen our programs, provide students with credentials, and ensure that financial barriers do not prevent them from pursuing their education. By connecting classroom instruction with workforce needs, we are helping students build successful futures while meeting the needs of local employers.

The grant will help cover certification exams, specialized training, and professional opportunities that give students a way to demonstrate their skills as they enter their chosen fields.

 These include:

Planned purchases include a medical simulation manikin, residential HVAC training systems, virtual reality headsets, a 3D printer and scanner, professional studio camera equipment, and specialized tools and materials for technical and creative programs.

The equipment will give students more opportunities to practice what they learn in class and become comfortable with technology used in their fields. These experiences help students build confidence and prepare for the next stage of their education or career.

The grant will also assist eligible low-income students enrolled in career and technical education programs. Support may include help with course costs, textbooks, and required supplies, expenses that can make it difficult for students to stay enrolled and complete their studies.

Funding will also support coordinating and managing the grant and its programs.

The cost of a certification exam, a textbook, or required supplies can be a real obstacle for a student, said Jason Fruge, Dean of Technical Occupations. This grant helps us address those needs while giving students more opportunities to practice their skills and prepare for the careers they want to pursue.

The Carl D. Perkins grant supports improvements in career and technical education, including stronger connections between classroom learning and career opportunities. At Sussex, the funding will help students gain practical experience, earn professional credentials, and pursue their goals while supporting the regions workforce.
