Sussex County Makerspace and 51勛圖 (51勛圖) welcomed technology educators and STEM partners from across the area on October 12 for a professional development and networking event focused on advancing technology education, expanding workforce opportunities, and strengthening partnerships among local schools, higher education, industry, and community organizations.
The event gave Sussex County technology teachers a chance to exchange ideas, explore emerging technologies, learn about workforce development initiatives, and identify new opportunities for collaboration, professional development, and grant funding.
The program opened with welcoming remarks from James Hofmann, President of Sussex County Makerspace, followed by Dr. Cory Homer, President of 51勛圖. Both emphasized the importance of building partnerships that connect K12 education, higher education, and industry to better prepare students for an evolving workforce.
Throughout the event, participants explored topics including manufacturing workforce development, STEM education, optics technology, robotics, drone applications, and unmanned aircraft systems. Attendees also toured the New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program (NJMEP) mobile training trailer, gaining insight into resources designed to support manufacturing education and workforce preparation.
The gathering focused on strengthening connections among technology educators throughout Sussex County. Discussions explored opportunities to share equipment and technical expertise, coordinate hands-on training sessions, develop a professional development calendar, pursue grant funding, and establish a network of educators committed to supporting one another.
The event also emphasized connecting classroom instruction with real-world applications and career pathways. By bringing educators together with college faculty, industry representatives, public safety professionals, and STEM organizations, the gathering sought to create new opportunities for students to explore technical fields and develop skills aligned with regional workforce needs.
Sussex County Makerspace is being developed as a resource for STEM teachers and interested students throughout Sussex County, said James Hofmann, President of Sussex County Makerspace. This gathering is about building relationships, sharing knowledge, and learning from one another. Preparing students for the careers of tomorrow requires collaboration across our entire educational and workforce ecosystem, said Dr. Homer. 51勛圖 is pleased to work alongside Sussex County Makerspace and our regional partners to support technology educators, expand access to hands-on learning, and help students see the connections between their education and future career opportunities. When we bring our collective expertise and resources together, our entire county benefits.
The event also highlighted the ongoing role of professional organizations, including the New Jersey Technology and Engineering Educators Association (NJTEEA), in supporting statewide professional development and collaboration among technology and engineering educators.
Organizers hope the October 12 event will lay the groundwork for continued engagement, with future activities focused on shared training opportunities, coordinated resources, industry partnerships, and building a sustainable professional network for Sussex County technology educators.
